6 for 6
this is a great job, but it gets even better when you walk into the office and find that the stack of mailers on your chair doesn't have a bad CD in it. usually, you can be guaranteed of at least one tiresome neo-goth grindcore band from the middle of nowhere or at the very least just a bunch of stuff that might be good but you don't recognize. this is great, too, because you get to find out about a lot of good stuff, but it's even better when you get 6 discs you're at the very least looking forward to:
boards of canada - the campfire headphase
danger doom (mf doom and danger mouse) - the mouse and the mask
john vanderslice - pixel revolt
sinead o'connor - throw down your arms
the go! team - thunder, lightning, strike (u.s. release)
tina schlieske - slow burn
so far, i can tell you the boards is great, the vanderslice great, the danger doom good, but the skits are pretty annoying, especially master shake's interjections. see, the album was made with the participation of the folks at adult swim, so where doom's albums usually have snippets from old fantastic four cartoons or radio shows or whatever, there are actual characters from adult swim making snippets specifically for this record, which really removes some of the fun, doesn't it? where's the collaging? it's like thinking that dj shadow's endtroducing would be a better album if he could have gotten live musicians to play every single sample just the way he wanted to use it. not that that wouldn't be cool for someone to do right now, but i digress.
the go! team was a little too peppy for midday listening, but it sounds good. i'm lisetning to tina schlieske's disc right now. kinda bonnie raitt-ish.
