mixchange

so i'm in the process of assembling a mix for exchange with some other music fans in other states of stuff i've heard and loved in the past six months. how excited was i to learn that i can make an entire hour-long mix of basically only minnesota artists and that it will completely rock? answer: very. here it is so far:

parallels :: beight
schoolyard bullies :: aphrill
drowned :: halloween, alaska
stand up (let's get murdered) :: p.o.s.
bombs away :: friends like these
market made murder :: sims
via satellite :: the notes and scratches (chicago)
ghost in the house :: the plastic constellations
playboy :: hot chip (brooklyn)
thieves choke on spit :: askeleton
oscar wilde breakdown :: digitata
what comes at the end :: cloud cult
lakeshore drifter :: cecil otter
gemini (birthday song) :: why? (cali? i'm not sure)

it strikes me now that i need to add white light riot's "out of sight," but i haven't ripped it to my itunes yet.

Your review turned me on to Electropolis, how about "The Slider"? Tawk about rawk!

electropolis really frickin' rules. there's a kind of genre of out there jazz that i really like that's prevalent in the twin cities with groups like electropolis, fantastic merlins, and happy apple. i can't quite nail down what ties them all together, but it seems to me that there's this willingness to expand the jazz vocabulary without taking the whole ship down in the process. reminiscent of my favorite jazz period, that being the early avante garde stuff of andrew hill, bobby hutcherson and sam rivers. it's seems to be much more about building something. not necessarily a device, but something improvised and explosive.
